Softball: Thunder tumble Cathedral twice

A bases-loaded homer by Ashley Ryding helped the Zimmerman Thunder sweep a doubleheader from St. Cloud Cathedral on Tuesday in St. Cloud.

The Thunder improved to 8-0 in the Granite Ridge Conference and 9-1 overall, while handing the Crusaders their first two GRC losses.

Ryding’s grand slam came in a 10-4 victory in game one, breaking a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning.  Ryding was 2-for-4 while Katelyn Bauer was 3-for-4 and Abbie Canton 2-for-3. Ashley Pool pitched the distance, allowing six hits and striking out five.

Heather McCormick’s RBI single in the seventh inning was the game-winner in game two as the Thunder prevailed 5-4. McCormick, who was 2-for-4, knocked in Gabby Antolak.

McKenna Butau pitched six innings with seven strikeouts. Pool pitched the top of the seventh and got the victory. Bauer was 2-for-2 and reached base all three times.

Zimmerman will play at Rogers in a non-conference game Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Rogers tennis team entered this week with a 2-8 record but came up with a pair of breakthrough victories, 5-2 over Cambridge-Isanti on Monday and 4-3 over Monticello on Tuesday.
