Golf: Elmquist, Elk girls grab first places at Purple Hawk tourney

Elk River senior Mary Elmquist was meet medalist with 81 and led the Elks to first place among eight teams in the Purple Hawk Invitational on Monday  in Cambridge.

Elmquist, returning all-conference player who struggled in her first three meets, opened with a 45 Monday but closed with a 36, and beat Andover standout Sierra Langlie by one stroke.

“She was hitting, chipping, putting solid, with real good irons,” said coach Dave Bleyhl. “Any time you can beat Langlie, you’re doing pretty good.”

The Elks had four of the top eight golfers as they won with 345. Andover was next with 360.

Morgan Bleyhl place fourth with 85, Morgan Dieterichs fifth with 87, and Samantha Lindeen eighth with 92.

The Elks will play in the Andover Invitational on Thursday at Bunker Hills, with several of the state’s elite teams on hand.
