Baseball: Royals salvage split with big inning against Monticello

The Rogers Royals put together a six-run inning to beat Monticello 8-3 in the second game of a doubleheader and earn a split on Thursday.

The Royals trailed 3-1 in the fourth inning when Adam Nauth led off with a single. They didn’t stop until they had a 7-3 lead with RBI hits in the inning delivered by Ryan Gelle (double), Tyler Antony, Kyle Ellis (double) and Reid Sagehorn.

Gelle was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI,  and Luke Selkin ripped an RBI triple. Gelle is 11-for-18 with six doubles in five games.

Ellis pitched the distance for the victory in his first start. He’s credited with all three wins for the Royals (3-2 overall, 2-1 conference), the other two in relief.

Monticello cruised 13-2 in the first game with Tanner Eckhard pitching six strong innings. Scott Neubauer was the Rogers starter and took the loss. Monticello had 12 hits. The Magic led 6-2 before scoring seven in the seventh.

Rogers will host St. Michael-Albertville on Monday, meaning their first four conference games will be against last year’s top two teams, STMA and Monticello.
