The Zimmerman golfers opened their season with a fourth-place finish in a conference meet at their home course, Elk River Golf Club, on Wednesday.

On a chilly first of May, St. Cloud Cathedral led with 329, followed by Becker 334, Albany 349, Zimmerman 361, Little Falls 363, Milaca 366, Princeton 373, Mora 377, Foley 414.

Chance Piccolo of Becker and Sam Labine of Cathedral tied for low shooter with 79, followed by Kyle Haag of Cathedral and David Schneider of Albany with 82.

The Thunder’s counting scorers were Max McNulty with 87, David Molinari 88, Justin Diegnau 92, and Cody Slocum 94.

“Considering it was our first time playing 18 holes all spring, we will take it,” said coach Kurran Sagan.  “Hopefully we continue to improve and bring our team score down from 361 and compete for 1st or 2nd in conference meets.”

Zimmerman lost its No. 1 golfer, senior Derek Faulkner, for the season, due to rule violations, said Sagan. Faulkner ranked No. 3 in the conference last year with a 40.2 average.

The second GRC meet is slated for Thursday in Foley.
