Softball: Thunder off to 2-1 start; beat Milaca 8-2 in conference opener

The Zimmerman Thunder have started the softball season winning two of three, including their conference opener 8-2 over Milaca there Monday.

“We didn’t graduate anyone,” said coach Emily Zahn, “and our whole defense is playing with more confidence. Our outfield is greatly improved.”

Ashley Pool, freshman right-hander, pitched the victory at Milaca. Gabby Antolak was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Morgan Feldick was 3-for-4 (RBI) and Carlie Lage 2-for-3 (walk, double, two runs, RBI).

On Saturday, the Thunder beat Rockford 3-2 with Pool pitching while Maddie Roisum and Ashley Ryding were each 2-for-3 and Antolak delivered a two-run single.

Also at Rockford, the Thunder lost 8-1 to New Life Academy, a program with four state championships and six consecutive state trips in Class A. Pool and McKenna Buteau (one inning) pitched. Ryding and Heather McCormick were each 2-for-3.

Zimmerman has a conference double header against Albany at home Thursday, 4 p.m.
