Golf: Rogers 13th, Elks 20th at Tri-State tourney to open season

The Rogers and Elk River golfers’ long-delayed season opener wound up being the state’s biggest regular-season tournament, the Tri-State Invitational, on Friday and Saturday.

The Royals placed 13th among 20 schools, scoring a 342 Friday and 324 Saturday for a 666 total, at Edinburgh in Brooklyn Park.

The champion, Minnetonka, shot 604. Individual winner was Rochester Century’s Chris Captain with 71-68-139.

Elk River had a rough opener, placing last with 367-358–775.

Rocky Nelson, senior who’s a new starter this year, led the Royals, shooting 82-76-158.
