The Elk River City Council has approved the hiring of Brian Beeman as the city’s economic development director.
Four candidates were interviewed for the position.
Beeman most recently was the city administrator for the city of Melrose. He also was city administrator for the city of Sutton, Neb., a state trooper in Nebraska and a second lieutenant in the Army National Guard. He served in Operation Enduring Freedom.
The council voted 3-1 to hire Beeman. Mayor John Dietz voted no and Council Member Matt Westgaard was absent. Dietz had wanted the city to do more “due diligence” after City Council members received an anonymous email regarding Beeman.
City Administrator Cal Portner said he did further checking and didn’t find anything that led to any concern.
The city also did its own background and reference checks “and everything has been well above board,” Portner said.
