Irish bands strike a chord

Traditional Irish bands and dancers entertained Tuesday evening at Zabee Theater as the Elk River and Zimmerman bands hosted a fundraiser for a trip to Ireland this summer.

Donating an hour-long performance each were the Hounds of Finn,  the Ring of Kerry and Legacy. Also performing were traditional Irish dancers in full costume from Shamrock and St. Paul School of Irish Dance.

This event took place two days after St. Patrick’s Day in “a week when we all are feeling a wee bit Irish,” said Tim Smith, the Zimmerman High School band director who formerly played in an Irish band himself.

Smith and Elk River High School band director John Rosner have been planning the trip for a couple of years. About 50 students have signed up for the 12-day tour starting July 5.

A send-off concert in Lions Park will be announced this spring, the date and time to be determined.
