Tourney turns elementary schoolmates into checkmates

Joe Montplaisir of Westwood Elementary School and Logan Braley of Meadowvale Elementary School took home top honors on Feb. 23 in their respective age brackets at the 4th Annual Meadowvale Tournament.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade represented their schools coming from Otsego, Westwood, Parker, Hassan and Meadowvale.  Participants played five preliminary rounds with the top eight moving into the finals.

Of those eight in each bracket the four winners then entered the Medal Round competing for first, second, third and fourth place.

In the fourth through fifth grade division other than Joe Montplaisir of Westwood placing first, Jacob Shaheen of Meadowvale captured second, Mason Barziza of Meadowvale finished third and Madison Stout of Parker was fourth.

In the kindergarten through third grade division other than Logan Braley of Meadowvale taking first place, Callen Croaston from Hassan finished second, Preston Jordan of Parker captured third and Ryan Weatherly of Meadowvale was fourth.

Nearly 60 students throughout the Elk River Area School District registered for the Chess Tournament.
