Donald Aarestad, 85, of Elk River, MN passed away on February 12, 2013, at Guardian Angels Care Center.
Don was born May 7, 1927, to Oswald and Lizzie Aarestad of Kintyre, ND. He was raised in the area until he was drafted in 1945 when he joined the Army. He served his time in Germany as a company clerk. On his return home, he farmed until he moved with his family to Elk River, MN in 1962. He worked for Elk River Hardware. He then worked for Bishman Manufacturing in Osseo, MN for 18 years until it moved out of state. He then worked odd jobs after that until his retirement.
Don was a very active Legion member since 1946. He was in the Legions Honor Guard, was Chaplain and Service Officer. In 1996, the Legion awarded him the Americanism award. He loved his county very much.
He was also a very active church member at the Union Congregational Church since 1962.
He was one of Elk River’s most active volunteers. He collected for the Crop Walk for 15 years and was the top collector. Don was inducted into the Crop Walk Hall of Fame in 2000. He was also the top collector of monies for Relay for Life. Anyone he knew that had cancer had their name on a luminary. He volunteered at school and was in the Silver Bells choir at church.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arthur, Leonard, Clarence and Willard; and sister, Lily.
He is survived by nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law Elsie and Faith, many many friends and the great caretakers at Guardian Angels Care Center.
