Wrestling: Zimmerman’s Robinson, Hunter qualify for state

Zimmerman wrestlers Mitch Robinson and Hunter Smith qualified for the state tournament by winning true-second matches fat the Section 5AA tournament Friday and Saturday at New London-Spicer.
Robinson, senior at 182 pounds, lost in the championship match to Foley’s Tyler Midas 9-7, but pinned Becker’s Dustin Peterson with a headlock in 1:32 in the true-second match.

Robinson (33-3) reached finals with a bye, a tech fall vs. Dassel-Cokato’s Aaron Aho 18-2, and a pin of Princeton’s Cole Warren in  1:49. In the finale, the match was tied 7-7 when Robinson shot for a takedown but Midas slipped behind Robinson and got the takedown.

Hunter (32-9), a junior at 132, took the long route to state afar losing to Princeton’s Dylan Auren 6-2 in the quarterfinals Friday. Smith beat Albany’s Leo Kerfeld 8-2 and Litchfield’s Tyler Jones 9-0 (avenging a December loss to the same man) to earn rematch with Auren (14-14), pinning him this time  in 5:28, In the true second, he nippedDassel-Cokato’s Jack Anderson 8-7, getting two near falls to build an 8- 4 lead and withstanding a late rally by Anderson.

The state individuals will be held Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Smith will take on Simley’s Kyle Gliva (38-4) in the first round while Robinson faces Austin Torres (31-3) of Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran.
It will be the second state trip for Robinson, who has 130 career wins. He went in 10th grade, then missed last year when he had mononucleosis during the season, missed a month and came back to place third in the section.
Austin May (27-12) placed fourth at 170 with a 2-2 mark for the day. Mitch Gagne (16-20) took fifth at 113 with a 3-2 mark including an injury default win. Trenton Milless (17-17) was sixth at 126 with a 2-3 mark.
