Wrestling: Elks’ Caldon in finals, 6 others in wrestlebacks at section

Elk River’s Evan Caldon has reached the finals and six other Elks are alive in wrestlebacks at the Section 7AAA tournament, which will conclude Saturday in Anoka.

Caldon, who placed sixth in the state at 126 last year, won twice Friday to reach the 132-pound title match against Mark Voss of St. Michael-Albertville.

Also still wrestling for the Elks are Ben Gibas at 113, Cole Moening at 120, Andrew Perry at 126, Kyle Ziemer at 138, Ryan Osberg at 160 and Garrett Van Epps at 285.

“We did not have a good first round, with only one of 13 guys winning,” said coach Paul Nelson. “We did better in the second round. Like we’ve always said, our section is really tough.”

Section 7AA has four teams ranked in the Dirty Dozen for Class 3A by The Guillotine, including STMA, top-ranked in the state and third-ranked in the nation (by Amateur Wrestling News).

Action resumes at 11 a.m. Saturday with the wrestleback rounds.
