Hockey: Weber sparks Rogers boys in 3-1 conquest of Legacy to open playoffs

Nate Weber sat for a while in the first and third periods but came up big in the second period, leading Rogers in a 3-1 playoff win over Legacy Christian at home on Thursday evening.

The junior forward scored 1:45 into the period, assisted by John Stanley, to tie the score 1-1, then scored again on a power play at 10:30, unassisted, for a 2-1 lead. Alexander Lorman made it 3-1 with a goal at 16:40, assisted by Weber.

Weber had a roughing penalty in the first period and slashing penalty in the third to go with his three-point night.

Legacy Christian got on the board first, with Brandon Leier scoring at 14:26 of the first period, on a power play after the third of three Rogers penalties in the period.

Otherwise Rogers (12-12-2) controlled play with a 35-12 edge in shots. Blake Ternus stopped 11 of 12 shots for Rogers, while Legacy goalie Tanner Balk stopped 32 of 35.

No. 4 seeded Rogers will duel top-seeded Hermantown (21-4-1) in the Section 5A semifinals on Saturday, 7 p.m., in Hermantown. The other semifinal will have Princeton at St. Cloud Cathedral.
