Saturday, March 2 is set for the fifth and final Joey Bongaarts Annual Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser, a one-day community event to raise money for educational scholarships.
Bongaarts, a graduate of St. Michael Albertville High School who has family in the Elk River area, died in an accident near Brainerd in 2008. He is remembered as a “generous, kind, outgoing and lovable young adult and friend.” He worked at River Lanes bowling alley in St. Michael, where, according to his family, he gained quite a fan club.
The scholarship fundraiser in his honor is being held where he worked, at River Lanes. The day starts with bowling and a variety of food items. Open bowling for all ages will be at noon and 3 p.m., cosmic bowling for all ages at 6 p.m. and moonlight bowling for adults 18 and up at 9 p.m.
There is a raffle with items for everyone and participants are sure to be entertained by the “traveling” sellers. Again this year attendees can sign up for a massage by Agnes of Touch 4 Health. There also will be the famous “Penny” raffle.
