The Elk River wrestlers defeated Andover 42-24 in a pigtail match to open the Section 7AAA tournament on Thursday.
The Elks’ reward for winning the 8 vs. 9 seeds playoff is to take on the state’s top-ranked team, St. Michael-Albertville, in the quarterfinals Friday at 4 p.m.
Evan Caldon and Alexander Schmitz each had a pin for the Elks (8-7) while Christian Tobin had a tech fall and Andrew Perry a major decision. Garrett Caldon and Kyle Ziemer each made a first-period takedown stand up for a 2-0 win. Ryan Osberg and Robert Schmitz also won decisions.
The Elks had lost to Andover 40-39 on Dec. 4.
