Police respond to report of suicidal male with shotgun at apartment
Elk River Police responded early Sunday morning to a report of a suicidal male with a shotgun in the 1100 block of School Street at an Elk River apartment building.
A third party caller reported the incident. Police were told that the man’s spouse and children were also present in the apartment. Upon arrival, Elk River Police deployed officers around the apartment, according to Sgt. Jeff Mordal of the Elk River Police Department.
Police spoke to the wife by phone. She at first said that he had left then when an officer heard a male’s voice in the background she said that he was there.
Eventually the police told her that he wanted to talk to her husband. He apparently thought it would be easier to talk if he came outside.
Once he did officers confronted him and secured him. He did not have a weapon outside, but there were weapons in the apartment, Mordal reported. The man was cooperative with police.
The wife said that he did not make any threats toward her or the kids, just himself.
The man was sent to Mercy Hospital for an evaluation. No criminal charges were made. The weapons were taken for safekeeping.
