Elk River wrestlers celebrated Senior Night and picked up their third straight win 39-22 over the Osseo Orioles on Friday evening.

Elk seniors Evan Caldon, Trevor Brink, Justin Gagnon and Jacob Brown all won their matches while the other senior, Adam Peterson, lost a decision.

The Elks got back to .500 at 6-6 with a week left in the regular season. They’re 5-3 in conference.

“We’ve got all the spots filled now, and everyone is wrestling at the weight they should be,” said coach Paul Nelson. “That’s where you want to be this time of year.”

Winning by pin were Brink, Garret Van Eps and Cole Moening. Brink was trailing when he threw Ryan Swenson to his back and held him down for the pin at 145. Van Eps trailed A.J. Dehn 4-1 after one period at 285 but got on top of his tiring opponent in the second period and headlocked him. Moening  used the butcher series to stick Ferhan Abdisa at 5:17 after leading 8-2.

Caldon eked out a 3-2 win over Carson Brolsma in a duel of state tournament veterans at 132. Caldon had the lone takedown. Brolsm  lost to Caldon 9-1 at the Elk River Invitation when he kept trying to shoot at Caldon’s legs, with the crafty Elk senior countering with his favorite move, the step-over move, for takedowns. The Oriole sophomore changed tactics for the rematch and almost beat the 100-win wrestler.

“This time Brolsma was smart enough not t shoot at Evan,” said Nelson. “He came to wrestle, and he is a tough kid.”

Robert Schmitz won 9-4 over Badhasa Wako  at 170. Schmitz got three takedowns by lifting one of Wako’s legs with his arms, then gently kicking the other to capsize him — leaving him without a leg to stand on, so to speak. “The inside kick, we work on that,” said Nelson.
