Chelsey Petrich scored the game’s first two goals in her home-ice finale and the Elk River skaters went on to defeat Cambridge-Isanti-Pine City-Mora 11-0 in their playoff opener Thursday evening.
The No. 3 seeded Elks (11-12-3) will take on No. 2 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (15-8-2) in the semifinals Saturday in Cloquet at noon. CEC beat St. Francis-North Branch 4-0.
The other semifinal will have No. 1 Forest Lake (13-10-2) hosting Duluth (10-14-1), a 3-2 winner over Grand Rapids-Greenway while Forest Lake had a bye.
Petrich, a fourth-year starter and the lone senior starter on a young team, notched a shorthanded goal, then an even-strength goal for a quick 2-0 lead. It was a rare scoring burst for a playmaking forward known more for her passing.
Sophomores Samantha Westgaard and Abbie Canton punched in two goals apiece. Notching one each were juniors Kaylee Forster and Mandy Sailor, sophomores Haley Williams and Julia Miller, and eighth-grader McKenna Wesloh.
Miller also made three assists and Wesloh and Maddie Gregersen two each. In goal, soph Jessica Edwards made 12 stops.
