Basketball: Rogers boys outshoot Monticello 88-71

The Rogers Royals were on target for  both free throws and three-pointers as they won a shootout over the Monticello Magic 88-71 at home Thursday evening.

Cullen Loughlin sank 22 points for the Royals (2-3 conference, 8-12 overall). He led five players in double digits as Gunnar Bloom scored 14 points, Luke Pecka 12, Cole Murray 12 and Ryan Gelle  11.

The Royals were 8-for-16 from three-point range, led by Gelle with three, and 24-for-32 at the line, led by Loughlin 9-for-10.

Laimer scored 28 for Monticello (0-5 conference, 6-14 overall), including seven 3-pointers. The Magic were 10-for-26 outside the arc but only 11-for-21 at the line.

Loughlin hit a three at the halftime buzzer for a 41-34 lead. Monticello started the second half with a 7-0 run to tie the score, but the Royals quickly pulled way for an 8- to 12-point lead most of the half, and wider at the end.

Sam Spilles, senior forward who was leading the team in scoring and playing a key defensive role, is currently sidelined with ankle problems.

The Royals will host Champlin Park on Saturday, 7 p.m.
