Swimming: Elks nip Monticello in final race 95-91; sectionals next

In a meet so close it was decided by third place in the final event, the Elk swimmers edged Monticello 95-91 at home Tuesday evening in their final dual meet.
The Elk River-Rogers-Zimmerman-Spectrum team finished the regular season 5-3.
(We were reminded to include Spectrum in the team name by watching Spectrum’s choir gave a nice rendition of the national anthem. The group includes two Kopp brothers who are swimmers.)
“Wow! It cam down to the last relay where we needed to place two-three to win,” said Elk coach Denise Eidem.
Monticello won the 400 freestyle relay by four seconds over Odrey Bechtel, Spencer Hlavachek, Nick Kopp and Aaron Schwab of the Elks, but the Elk quartet of Conner Swigart, Ben Kopp, Jeremy Mayo and Derek Jacobsen placed third, beating Monti’s second team by eight seconds, to secure the win.
“We swam very well tonight. We had lots of great performances as we head into sections in two weeks,” said Eidem.
“We match up well with Monticello, and it is one of our perennial favorite meets. We knew it would be a close, competitive meet and the score went back and forth.”
The Elks pulled out the win despite having five first-places to Monticello’s seven. Elk victors were Schwab in the IM and backstroke, Andrew Bronshteyn in diving, Hlavacheck in the 500, and the MR of Hlavachek, Nick Kopp, Schwab and Bechtel.
Monticello is led by seniors Paul and Jack Fair, and Evan Lahr. Noting that Minnesota Gophers coach Dennis Dale was in attendance, Eidem said, “I suppose he’s here to see Paul Fair.” The winner of the 200 freestyle and butterfly Tuesday night was recently written up in the Star Triune as a star athlete with “swimming skill in a football body.”
This was was the home finale for Schwab, Bechtel, Austin Holzheu, Alex Kopp, Bryan Pasquel, and Swigart. They were honored on Senior Night. Schwab has swum varsity for six years.
“It was great to win for our six seniors,” said the coach.
Next for the Elks is the Section 8AA meet at St. Cloud Tech on Feb. 22-23.
