Basketball: Brainerd stymies Elks 58-36
The Brainerd Warriors, coming off their first loss of the season the night before, rebuffed a challenge by section rival Elk River, 58-36 on Saturday afternoon in Brainerd.
Brainerd was 14-0 before losing a wild 95-93 decision at Moorhead on Friday evening with senior forward Aaron Lien scoring 53 points for the Spuds.
The Warriors were able to quickly re-establish their defense against the Elks, who had been averaging 63.5 points with a low of 48.
Marcus Comstock scored 20 points and Jack Sauer 18 and for the Warriors in a physical, ragged game that had 38 fouls and 59 turnovers.
Clay Elrod with 10 points and Porter Morrell with 9 led the Elks. Bryan Edwards had a frustrating game as well with 6 points and 5 rebounds while fouling out.
The Elks (13-5) lost outside their conference for the first time. They’re now 4-1 against section rivals, having beaten Buffalo, STMA, Rogers and Monticello.
The Elks will host Blaine on Tuesday.
