Hockey: Buffalo boys overtake Rogers 6-4; another Royal title unlikely

The Buffalo Bison scuttled Rogers’  bid for a fourth straight Mississippi 8 hockey title Thursday evening, scoring four goals in the final period to beat the Royals 6-4 in Buffalo.

Rogers led 2-0 after one period, and 4-2 after two periods, with Nate Weber (power play), Jason Roberge, Branden Cecil (power play), and Brandon Spah knocking in the goals.

Buffalo (10-8-2 overall) came alive in the final period, pushing four of their 10 shots past Royal goalie Blake Ternus.  Goals were scored by Gunnar Gunnarson, Jordan Carlson, Cale Ehresman, and Jake Patnode, who go the clincher on a power play with 13 seconds left.

Buffalo is 5-1 with two games left in  conference. Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake is 3-2, Rogers 3-3, St. Michael-Albertville 3-3, and Cambridge-Isanti 1-5.

Rogers, graduating heavily after their third straight title, started conference 1-2, then won two straight, and could have tied Buffalo for the lead had they won.

The Royals lost despite a 40-29 edge in shots and going 2-for-2 on power plays.
Weber made two assists in addition to his goal. Buffalo goalie Tim Harkess stopped 36 of 40 while Ternus finished 23 of 29.

Rogers (8-10-2), which had a three-game win streak snapped, will host Proctor on Saturday at 2 p.m.
