Hockey: Royal boys finish strong, tumble STMA 5-1

The Rogers Royals broke open a close game with a burst of three goals in 2 1/2 minutes late in the third period and defeated St. Michael-Albertville 5-1 on Tuesday on the Knights’ ice.

Rogers’ Jacob Walker and STMA’s Mike Ryan scored in the first period, and Nate Weber put Rogers ahead 2-1 in the second period with a goal assisted by Jason Roberge.

The Royals finally pulled away when Roberge scored at 11:17 of the third (Matt Hellickson assisting), followed by power play goals by Walker at 12:30 (Travis Brown, Brandon Spah) and Alexander Lorman at 13:47 (Roberge, Spah).

Rogers had a 33-21 shots edge and was 2-for-4 on power plays, with Blake Ternus stopping 20 of 21 shots.

The Royals, in a start-over year after winning three straight conference titles, started 1-2 in the Mississipi 8 this year with a win over Cambridge-Isanti and losses to Buffalo and MAML. But their current three-game win streak includes conference wins over C-I and now STMA.

Current standings are Buffalo 4-1, Rogers and MAML each 3-2, STMA 3-3, and Cambridge-Isanti 1-5.

The Royals (8-9-2 overall) will try to regain a first-place time at Buffalo on Thursday.
