Wrestling: Royals beaten by Blaine and No. 1 STMA

The Rogers Royals took on two of the top teams on their schedule Thursday evening, losing to St. Michael-Albertville 60-6 and Blaine 63-12 on the STMA mats.

Cruz Martin’s first-period pin at 120 earned the only points against the Knights, a Mississippi 8 Conference rival ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Connor Larson at 132 had a pin against Blaine and lost by just 8-4 to a ranked STMA wrestler, Tanner Mills. Steffen Paige and Jordan Lemcke  won decisions against Blaine.

“We rested five starters against Blaine, due to match count issues, so we got a bunch of newer guys some experience,” said coach Chris Donnay. “The boys learned a lot from tonight’s meet. They know where we want to be. ¬†To get those young guys some experience will help us out in the long run.”

Rogers (8-8) will compete at the Fridley tournament on Saturday.
