More than 100 people attended the five-year anniversary party Thursday, Jan. 10 to celebrate the opening of the Elk River Activity Center in December 2007. Participants enjoyed cake and punch along with music by Manny Cortez.
The Elk River Activity Center is part of the City of Elk River Parks and Recreation Department and is for people age 55 and older. The center is located at 413 Proctor Ave., the former home of the Elk River Library.
Since opening in 2007 the attendance at the Activity Center has grown by 57 percent, according to Senior Citizen Coordinator Annette Bonin. In 2013 more 22,000 people attended the center, participating in a variety of fitness, educational, recreational and social activities.
As part of the five-year celebration, participants were asked to state what they enjoyed most about the activity center. Some of the comments included:
•Fellowship of community and staff
•Great gathering center
•Home away from home
•Always something going on
•Warm, homey atmosphere to gather for activities
•Relief from loneliness and a place to find new friendships and projects to enhance our lives
