The Rogers Royals were outrebounded decisively and lost to St. Michael-Albertville 62-60 at home in their conference opener Friday evening.
The Knights earned a 38-27 rebound advantage, including 15-11 on their offensive end. Meanwhile, they almost lost it at the free throw line, going 7-for-17 while Rogers made 18 of 24.
Rogers had two chances to tie or win in the last 15 seconds but missed a layup and a desperation 3-pointer.
Jackson Greenwaldt scored 15 points, Cole Krutzig 13 and Trevor Rothstein 11 for the Knights (8-7).
Cole Murray scored 16 points, Cullen Loughlin 15 and Ryan Gelle 13 for Rogers (5-9). Gelle had six rebounds.
The Royals played without senior forward Sam Spilles, which hurt them especially on the boards. Spilles injured his ankle in practice Thursday. The Royals hope to have him back next week.
With the Mississippi 8 down to six teams, there’s only a 10-game conference schedule, so Rogers didn’t open conference until its 14th game.
Rogers will play at Cambridge-Isanti on Thursday.
