Basketball: Elks rule second half, beat Centennial 59-48

The Elk River ElksĀ  played a strong second half and beat the Centennial Cougars 59-48 at home on Friday evening.

Centennial led 19-18 at halftime with both teamsĀ  working very hard defensively. The Elks finally started to pull away when Porter Morrell nailed two straight 3-pointers for a 43-34 lead.

Elks senior forward Max Person shot 7-for-8 and scored a career-high 16 points. He was 2-for-3 on 3-pointers.

Clay Elrod also scored 16 points. Terry Hadden chipped in 10 points. Bryan Edwards delivered nine points, four steals and 11 rebounds.

Morrell had eight points and five assists, in an off-night shooting (2-for-10) except for the two straight treys.

The Elks were 8-for-19 on 3-pointers and 15-for-23 on free shots.

Centennial’s 6-foot-8 senior post Quin Peterson scored 14 points. Senior 6-6 forward Dan Becken had 11. The Cougars made six 3-pointers.

The Elks improved to 6-3 in conference and 10-3 overall. Centennial dropped to 2-7 and 5-9.

The Elks will play at No. 4 ranked Osseo on Tuesday.
