Wrestling: Zimmerman, Rogers have one champ each at Thunder tournament

The Zimmerman Thunder had one champion, Austin May, while their star Mitch Robinson lost a duel of unbeatens to place second, at the Zimmerman Invitational on Saturday.

The Thunder tied for fifth place among nine teams.

Glencoe-Silver Lake-Lester Prairie placed first and had three champions.

Rogers had one champion and one runner-up (see below).

May (11-3), a sophomore, was champion at 170 pounds with a 39-second pin of Princeton’s Wyatt Ross in the finals. May had a bye, then a 6-3 win over GSLLP’s Tristian Weber.
Robinson (13-1), a senior, lost in the 195-pound finals to Jamison Evans (16-0) of Grand Rapids, 8-4. Robinson reached the fails with a 14-0 win over Rockford’s Kado Cano and 58-second pin of Princeton’s Cole Warren.

Another Thunder runner-up was Hunter Smith (11-4), a junior, who lost to Rockford’s Brad Johnson 2-1 in the 132-pound finals. Smith reached finals with two decisions.

Chase Rosby (10-8), a freshman,  took third at 145 pounds with a 3-1 mark for the day. Trentin Milless (13-7), a freshman, was 2-2 and placed fifth at 126.
Zimmerman will wrestle Holdingord and Foley on Friday at Foley.

Royals have champ, runner-up

Rogers had one champion, Peter Oakland, and one runner-up. The team had entrants at just seven of 14 weights, with several held out due to match counts, said coach Chris Donnary. They placed seventh among nine teams.

Oakland (9-8), freshman heavyweight, placed first among four entrants with pins against Grand Rapids’ Cole Walters in 1:22 and Glencoe-Silver Lake-Lester Prairie’s Chris Lemke in 3:37.

Andrew Piehl (10-6), also a freshman, was 220-pound runner-up. He pinned Rockford’s Jake Pittman in 1:23 and Princeton’s Luke Winkelman in 3:46, then lost 4-3 in the finals to Pine Island’s Zach Kennedy, who has an 18-1 record.

Connor Larson (12-4) was 2-2 for the day and placed fourth at 126. Jordan Bond (4-12) was 2-2 and placed fifth at 138.

Rogers will host Buffalo on Thursday.
