Hockey: Elk girls beat White Bear Lake 5-1, reach Centennial tourney finals

Three players notched their first goal of the season to help Elk River beat White Bear Lake 5-1 in the semifinals of Centennial’s holiday tournament on Friday.

The Elks (4-8-3) face No. 5 ranked Mounds View in the championship game of the eight-team tournament Saturday at 8 p.m.

The game was scoreless until the Elks erupted for three goals in less than three minutes in the second period — Breanna Simon (power play) at 9:50, Haley Williams at 11:03, and Samantha Westgaard at 12:33.

The Elks made it  5-1 in the third period as Jenna Gerber scored at 3:26 and Tayler Schmitt at 6:59.

It was the first goal this year for sophomores Williams and Westgaard, and for Schmitt, a junior. Simon has six goals and Gerber three.

The Elks had a 35-22 edge in shots. Jessica Edwards had 21 saves.

Abby Canton was credited with two assists and McKenna Wesloh, Chelsey Petrich, Simon, and Westgaard one each.
