In addition to Elk River stories in the top 10 stories of the year, here are some other city news highlights from 2012:

•Elk River’s branding effort was pronounced “off to a blazing start” in April by the consultant who helped the city come up with its new Powered by Nature brand.

•Devin Bennington, 12, hit a hole in one at Elk River’s city-owned Pinewood Golf Course in June — and it was only his third time golfing. The course saw another unusual event unfold in October, when two men played seven rounds in one day. That was 63 holes each for Erik Haselius and Dave Butts.

•Barb Burandt won the Elk River Ward 3 council race by 217 votes in November, edging Mike McDonough. In the other council race, Ward 2 Council Member Matt Westgaard was re-elected without opposition. Council Member Jerry Gumphrey did not seek re-election.

•The City Council approved a budget for 2013 in December that includes a property tax levy that is the lowest since 2007.
