Hockey: Elk boys start strong, beat Maple Grove 4-2

Elk River connected on three of seven shots in the first period and went on to defeat Maple Grove 4-2 on Thursday evening in a conference game at the Sports Authority Holiday Classic.

Junior forward Chase Springman notched two goals and an assist at the St. Louis Park Arena as the Elks stayed unbeaten in the Northwest Suburban Conference at 5-0.

The Elks, bouncing back from three losses against high-level foes at the Edina Invitational, improved to 6-4 overall. They will play Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the semifinals Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Peter Jones, Springman, and Jake Jaremko scored in the first period, in which both teams had seven shots, but the Elks emerged with a 3-0 lead. Springman assisted on the Jones goal.

Sam Valerius got the Crimson (3-2 conference, 3-7 overall) on the board in the second period.

Springman put the Elks back up by three with a goal 4:37 into the third period, Wyatt Ege and Colton Budreau assisting.  Nate Erickson scored on a power play for the Crimson with seven minutes left.

Shots even as Maple Grove had 24 and the Elks 23, with Maclean Berglove notching 22 saves for the Elks and John Danielson 19 for the Crimson.
