Hockey: Canton OT goal lifts Elk girls over Centennial 3-2 in tourney

Abby Canton’s overtime goal gave Elk River a 3-2 win over Centennial in a conference game at the Centennial holiday tournament Thursday evening in Circle Pines.

Canton, who leads the club with eight goals, scored on a two-on-one break, with an assist from Kaylee Forster, three minutes into the extra session.

The Elks are 3-6-2 in conference and 3-8-3 overall, with two wins against the Cougars, who dropped to 3-7-1 and 3-10-1. Centennial’s first-year head coach is Dale Sager, who was assistant to Elk River’s Joe Heasley for several years.

Breanna Simon scored shorthanded in the second period and McKenna Wesloh scored in the third period for the Elks. Jessica Edwards made 28 saves. Centennial outshot the Elks 30-20.

The Elks face White Bear Lake in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m.
