Hockey: Top-ranked Edina stymies Elk boys 4-1

The top-ranked, unbeaten Edina Hornets limited Elk River to 16 shots on goal and beat the Elks 4-1 on Friday evening in the second round of the Edina Invitational.
Tyler Nanne and Cullen Munson scored for Edina (8-0) in the second period. Elk River defenseman Wyatt Ege delivered on a power play 3:25 into the third period, assisted by Andrew Zerban.
Edina nursed the 2-1 lead until just 1:10 remained in the game when Dylan Malmquist scored. The Hornets added Miguel Fidler’s goal with :04 left.
Hornet goalie Willie Benjamin stopped 15 of 16 shots and Elk River’s Maclean Berglove stopped 26 of 30. Edina was 0-for-3 on power plays and the Elks capitalized on their lone opportunity.
The Elks (5-3), who lost to Eden Prairie 4-2 in the first round Thursday, will close the round-robin tournament facing Grand Rapids on Saturday at 6 p.m.
