The Zimmerman Thunder almost pulled off an upset of their coach’s previous team but Monticello held them off 51-47 on Friday evening in Monticello.
The Thunder (3-6) were down by a dozen at halftime and got within two late in the game but Monticello (8-1) held on.
“That was a homecoming for me, being the team I used to coach, and it w as exciting for me to have the girls play so well,” said Zimmerman coach Lance Dalbey. “I was very proud of them. Our defense in the second half was probably the best half we have played this year.”
Brooke Borchardt scored 13 points (three 3-pointers), Heather McCormick 12 and Lexi Wiemeri nine for the Thunder.
The Thunder will take on West Lutheran on Thursday in the first round of the Ogilvie tournament at 6 p.m.
