The Elk River girls scored the first two goals but couldn’t hold on as North Wright County overtook them  4-2 on Thursday evening at Elk River Arena.

Chelsey Petrich and Breanna Simon scored for the Elks (2-8-3) in the first period.

The River Hawks tied the score on power play goals by Diane Sibley in the second period and Emily Achterkirch in the third period.  An even-strength goal by Rachel Hieber gave the visitors the lead.

The Elks had a good opportunity to regain a tie in the last two minutes as NWC had two penalties 1:20 apart. Pulling the goalie and skating 6-on-3 for 40 seconds, the Elks weren’t able to score. Shortly after NWC got one skater back on the ice, a clearing pass by Sibley found its way into the Elks empty net for the clincher.

NWC (11-2-1) had a 21-12 edge in shots. In goal, Dayna Duncan stopped 10 of 12 for NWC and Kim Scott 17 of 20 for the Elks.

Next for the Elks is the Centennial tournament Dec. 27-28-29, starting with a conference game against the host team on Dec. 27 at 6:30 p.m
