Porter Morrell’s 3-point shot was the game-winner as Elk River edged Blaine 48-45 on Tuesday evening in Blaine.
Bryan Edwards tied the score with a layup before Morrell sank the last 3 of his 18 points with 21 seconds left. Blaine was unable to get a good look for a 3-pointer in the time remaining and put up a desperation shot that hit the back rim at the horn.
The Elks stayed unbeaten with a 5-0 record, 3-0 in conference.
Edwards pulled down 16 rebounds and blocked 3 shots while scoring 10 points. Clay Elrod also scored 10 points.
The Elks won the rebound battle 33-18 but Blaine (2-2 conference, 4-3 overall) won the ball-control battle 19 turnovers to 9.
“Typical Northwest Suburban game,” said Elk coach Randy Klasen. “Very physical … and very competitive. It wasn’t our most complete game, but the type of game that we needed to help us recognize the areas of our performance that we need to improve upon.”
The Elks will host Andover on Thursday.
