A large group of young swimmers led by Spencer Hlavacheck made its presence felt as Elk River-Zimmerman won its dual opener 101-77 win over Champlin Park on Thursday evening at home.

Hlavacheck, a freshman, won the 200 and 500 freestyles, and led off a 400 freestyle relay win. Sophomores Nick Kopp and Andrew Bronshteyn won backstroke and diving, respectively.

Elk senior standout Aaron Schwab took the individual medley and butterfly. Another senior, Odrey Bechtel, won the 100  free and led off a 200 relay win.

“Spencer had a great night winning both his individual events and leading off the 400 relay with a great split,” said coach Denise Eidem. “He is one of our young swimmers to watch.”

The roster of 39 includes 21 in grades nine and 10.

“They stepped it up tonight,” said Eidem, adding that soph Owen Musgjerd and freshman Jake Kohorst made good showings.  “We look much better than we did at the conference relay meet (last Saturday),”

The Elks will swim at St. Michael-Albertville, a  strong section rival, next Thursday.
