Hockey: Elk boys start fast, beat Cardinals 8-2
Elk River-Zimmerman struck for five goals in the first period and went on to defeat Coon Rapids 8-2 in their conference opener at home Thursday evening.
Sophomore forward Jacob Jaremko led with three goals and three assists as the Elks (1-1) presented new coach Gordie Roberts with his first ERHS win.
The line of Jaremko, Tim Sanford and Chase Springman produced five goals, four of them in the first period.
Springman knocked in two goals and assisted on four others. Sanford had two goals and two assists.
Reggie Lutz had the other goal. Jack Geissler, Wyatt Egge, Blake Hillman and Ben Johnson each made an assist.
The Elks led 5-0 before Seth Johnson and Brett Debaker scored for the Cardinals (0-3) in the second period.
The Elks outshot the visitors 45-7. Cam Korlath was in goal for the Elks, stopping five of seven. There were no power play goals.
Elk River will play at Andover on Saturday, 7 p.m.
