Hockey: Mahtomedi tumbles Royal boys 7-3

The Rogers Royals absorbed their first loss, getting thumped by Mahtomedi 7-3 at home on Tuesday evening.

Mac Rathmanner and Matt Bonine knocked in two goals each for the Zephyrs, who were opening their season. Jake Erickson, Kellen Campbell and Trevor Keeney notched the other goals. Erickson had a short-handed goal and Bonine had a power play goal.

Branden Cecil and Connor Tokheim scored in the first period for Rogers (1-1-1), which led 2-1 at the first stop.  Nate Weber (power play) scored in the third period.

Mahomedi outshot the Royals 29-23. Zephyr goalie Colin Davis stopped 20 of 23 shots, Rogers goal Blake Ternus 22 of 29.

Rogers will  host North Branch on Thursday.
