Hockey: Coon Rapids’ two late goals beat Elk girls 3-2

Coon Rapids struck for two goals in the last 4 1/2 minutes to pull out a 3-2 win over Elk River-Zimmerman on Thursday evening in Coon Rapids.

Abby Canton scored on a power play 2:06 into the final period to give the Elks a 3-2 lead.
The Cardinals, who outshot the Elks 35-22, tied the score on Britni DelCastillo’s goal at 11:39. They took the lead on Heidi Hannula’s power play goal at 16:41, just 29 seconds before the buzzer.

Breanna Simon scored for the Elks in the first period and Bailey Ryan countered for the Cardinals in the second period.

Coon Rapids goalie Ali Weber stopped 20 of 22, and Elk goalie Jessica Edwards stopped 32 of 35.

Canton assisted on Simon’s goal. Kaylee Forster and Chelsey Petrich assisted on Canton’s goal.

The Elks are 1-4-1 in the NWSC and 1-5-1 overall. The Cardinals are 1-5 in conference and 2-7 overall.

The Elks will host Andover on Saturday, 7 p.m.
