Basketball: Maple Lake fends off Spectrum girls 58-46

The Spectrum girls lost to Maple Lake 58-46 at home on Tuesday evening, with junior guard Rachel Stevenson scoring 20 points for the Sting.

The outcome was a big improvement on last year when the Irish won easily. Maple Lake returns all but one starter and has a 3-0 record.

Shelby Rachel hit 17 points and Dani Hudek  14 for Maple Lake

Spectrum led 28-24 at the half. Maple Lake, one of the favorites in Spectrum’s section, was bigger and had more depth, and used those advantages in the second half, playing a physical, up tempo type game, taking a 7-point lead with less than 5 minutes to play.

The Sting were in foul trouble much of the second half, with Beca Gleason, and Becca Schultz fouling out, and Brynn Bozich leaving the game with an ankle injury.

Shelby Eden scored 10 points, Schultz 7, Bozich 4, Gleason 3, and Rachel Goldsmith 2.

Next for Spectrum (1-2) is Southwest Christian on Saturday, 3 p.m., in Chaska.
