The Elk River girls are 0-2 in conference after facing pair of ranked teams to open the NWSC schedule.
The Osseo Orioles, ranked No. 6, beat the Elks 66-51 on Tuesday evening in Osseo, led by senior guard Phyllis Werbb with 23 points. Madi Malone added 12.
The Elks (2-2) also lost to No. 9 Centennial 71-66 last Thursday. They’ll try break into the win column in NWSC play hosting Coon Rapids on Thursday.
Elk River led 22-20 at the half but gave up 46 points in the second half when the Orioles imposed their faster style on the Elks.
“We kept the game to our pace in the first half,” said coach Reed Caouette, “but Osseo forced us into an uptempo game in the second half, and they outrebounded us and made lots of steals. Some of our missed layups, they would turn into layups on the other end.”
Shelby Gracik tallied 19 points for the Elks, hitting three 3-pointers. The Orioles defense stymied the Elks top two scorers, holding 6-2 freshman center Abi Scheid (19.5 ppg coming in) to 8 points, and senior guard Jordyn Sohns (18 ppg) to 9 points.
