Wrestling: Thunder 8th at Fridley, Robinson nabs a title
A championship by Mitch Robinson was the highlight for Zimmerman as the Thunder placed eighth in the 12-team Fridley Invitational on Saturday.
The Thunder also had a runner-up, Hunter Smith, and third-place finishes by Trentin Miless and Austin May in their season-opener.
Robinson, 195-pound senior, opened the season with his 100th career win, beating Conner Laubach of Irondale, and followed with a 12-3 win over Yasir Shabazz of Mpls. Henry and, in the finals, a 4-2 win over Chandler Arredondo of Edina-Richfield.
The victory over Laubach was the 100th of Robinson’s career.
Smith, at 132, had a bye, pin, and decision to reach the finals where he lost to Irondale’s Dustin Weinmann 7-3.
Miless, a 126-pound freshman, and May, 170-pound sophomore, each went 4-1 with one pin to claim their respective third-places.
Chase Rosby placed fourth at 145 with a 2-2 record and two pins.
The Thunder filled eight of 14 slots for the tournament.
Zimmerman’s next match will be Dec. 10 at Champlin Park.
