The Zimmerman Thunder held off a rally by St. Francis and picked up their first victory 57-55 at home on Thursday evening.

“The girls played extremely hard, right from the opening tip,” said Thunder coach Lance Dalbey.

Junior guard Lexi Funaro sank 15 points and senior guard Heather McCormick 15 for the Thunder (1-2). Senior forward Lexi Wiemerl was next with seven.

Nicole Borstner tallied 16 and Emily Larson 15 for the Saints (0-2).

Zimmerman led by as much as 12 in the second half. The Saints scrambled back to take a 3-point lead with four minutes left.

“The kids responded with some huge baskets to get the lead back and hold on,” said Dalbey.

Zimmerman will host Fridley on Friday night.
