Basketball: Rookies help Elks beat Zimmerman, Waconia to open season
Varsity rookies contributed heavily for Elk River as the Elks opened the season with two high-scoring wins at a Waconia tournament, 83-45 over Zimmerman on Friday and 78-75 over Waconia on Saturday.
Senior guard Jordyn Sohns was high scorer with 42 for the tournament while freshmen Abi Scheid and Jayme Langebehn and junior Molly Detloff also had double-digit games.
Sohns scored 23 points against Zimmerman. Langebehn, a 5-8 forward, and Scheid, a 6-2 center, had 15 each.
Scheid poured in 21 points and Sohns 19 in the close win over Waconia. Detloff, a 5-8 forward, added 15 and Langebehn eight.
Anna Schmitt scored 24 for Waconia, Miranda Schultz 16, Caroline Jacobs 14 and Steph Dressen 10. Waconia made several 3-pointers and had one hit the rim in the last second.
The Elks will play at Buffalo on Tuesday night.
