The Elk River swimmers are in position to qualify for state in six events, possibly more, after an encouraging Section 8AA preliminary round Friday in their home pool. They had the best times in five events.
All three relays had the fastest prelim times while Courtney Grunewald and Ali Schwab each have a first and a second individually. Taylor Odegard is sitting third and fourth in sprints.
The swimming finals at Vandenberg Middle School begin 4 p.m. Saturday. The diving competition will start at noon. The Elks don’t have any leading contenders in diving.
The Elk 200 medley relay team of Emma Johnson, Schwab, Grunewald andTaylor was first in 1:52.16. The 200 freestyle team of Grunewald, Odegard, Samantha Hendricks and Schwab was first in 1:40.29. The 400 freestyle crew of Marin Hayes, Hannah Johnson, McKenna Holien and Hendricks leads in 3:50.19.
Grunewald had the best butterfly prelim (59.33) and second-best medley time (2:14.12). Schwab leads in the 50 free with 24.67, and is second in the breaststroke (1:08.93).
Odegard had the third-best 50 time (25.21) and fourth-best in the 100 (55.05). Also in the finals are Johnson, fourth in the backstroke (1:02.43) and Brittany DeValk, who’s fourth in the breaststroke (1:12.04) and sixth in the medley (2:22.52).
