Michaela Schulz’s stellar six-year tennis career with Elk River ended with a second-round loss in state singles competition on Thursday.
Schulz beat conference rival Mary Liz Swanson of Blaine 7-5, 6-4, at the U of M Baseline Center in Minneapolis, then lost to an Edina seventh-grader. Schulz won the first set 6-2 but Sophie Reddy bounced back 6-2 and 6-3 to reach the semifinals.
Reddy played No. 2 singles when Edina, the eventual state champion, beat the Elks 6-1 in the first round of team competition Tuesday. Schulz won a 3-setter over senior Maddie Boyer at No. 1. Boyer was not a state qualifier.
Schulz finished 30-4 this year, and 198-33 in her career. She’s second in all-time wins at ERHS behind Katie Jesperson.
