We have a great many issues to consider for next month’s visit to the polls. While all are important, one in particular will directly impact the immediate future of our children in Independent School District 728. Should our community approve an increase to the district’s general education revenue by $400 per student? For the average homeowner, answering YES will increase monthly taxes by $13.67. For nearly 13,000 students, a YES vote will provide funding for all-day, every-day kindergarten, a curriculum cycle shortened from 10 to 7 years, and puts the tools of current technology into the hands of our students.
This vote does not only effect families of school-aged children. Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce and tomorrow’s caregivers to the young, the sick, the aging. How we educate our children now decides the future of our nation. Let us promise our community we will provide all learners with the same opportunities, up-to-date research-based resources, and current learning tools and technologies.
Please vote YES for the district’s referendum questions 1 and 2. Thank you for your time and dedication to the public education of our children! — Michelle Hegarty, Elk River
