Melvin “Ole” G. Thompson, 78, Zimmerman, died Sunday, October 7, 2012, at the Elim Care and Rehabilitation Center, Princeton.

Melvin “Ole” Gene Thompson was born May 24, 1934, in Anoka, MN, the son of Milton and Agnes (Weinhold) Thompson.  He spent his early years in the East Bethel area before moving to the Zimmerman area in the 1940’s.  He attended school in Elk River, MN, through the 9th grade.  Melvin met Jean Reineccius while roller skating at the Spectacle Lake Ballroom in West Point, MN.  On August 7, 1954, Melvin and Jean were united in marriage at Cambridge Lutheran Church.  Melvin served in the United States Armed Forces as part of the Korean occupation.  He was a lifelong employee at Hoffman Engineering managing the tool crib.

Melvin loved the outdoors and had a special interest in cars, motorcycling, and snowmobiling.  As a young man, he had a special passion to go snow skiing behind cars with friends. Along with riding his Harley Davidson, Melvin also enjoyed spending time fishing, waterskiing, and enjoying time with friends and family.  His laughter will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife: Jean of 58 years; son: Dean Thompson; daughters: Shari (Steve) Germscheid, Diann Korus, and Colleen Thompson (Mark Benderski); grandchildren: Jake Reed, Jessica Reed, Brianna Germscheid, Katie Germscheid, Lexie Richter, Elizabeth Germscheid, Cassidy Thompson and Audrey Benderski; great grandchildren: MacKenzie Reed, Kamya Reed, Kaeden Reed, Kianna Reed, Kailihl Reed, and Kolaiah Reed; sisters: Veronica Schmiege and Arlene (Roger) Huntley; brother in law Lloyd Gerth; sister-in-laws Ione Rose and Marge (Bill) Palmer, and many other loving relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Milton and Agnes Thompson; sister: Irene Gerth; brother: Dennis Thompson; and brother-in-laws, Howard Schmiege, Don Kriesel, Russell Rose, and Billy Reineccius.

Celebration of Life:  Zimmerman Legion Post 560 from 5 until 8 PM, Monday October 15.

Memorial Service: 2 PM, Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at the Elim Care and Rehabilitation Center Chapel, 701 1st Street, Princeton, MN, with a memory sharing time one hour prior to the service at the Elim Chapel.  Interment at the Oak Knoll Cemetery following the service, 511 13th Avenue North, Princeton, MN.
