Lucas and Ryan Trapp led Elk River to a sixth-place finish among 11 teams in the Northwest Suburban Conference meet Thursday, in a performance that was encouraging toward their primary goal.

Lucas, a freshman, placed fifth, and Ryan, a senior, placed 12th. Both were markedly faster than last year and both made all-conference.

“I felt¬† we did really good today, which is a good step for us toward sections,” said Ryan about the team. “The competition is really strong in our conference. I think we definitely have a chance in the section where the top two teams go to state.”

Lucas, the only ninth-grader in the top 22, finished in 16:37.7 at Elk River Golf Club, 28 seconds faster than last year on the same course, when he placed 12th as an eighth-grader.

“I could’ve done better,” he said. “It’s a hard course. The next race will be better.”

Lucas missed the first two weeks with tendinitis in his ankle.

“It’s a lot better now. They haven’t hurt for a while,” he said.

Ryan’s time of 17:00.2 was 36 seconds faster than last year when he placed 23rd.

“I cut it in half,” he said, meaning his placement, “and I’m real happy about that.”

Centennial, led by Jonathan Keller in third place and Kevin Grow in seventh, was champion with a 3-7-10-11-14 finish for 45 points. Maple Grove with 70 and Armstrong with 104 were next.

Andover finished fifth, but had the two stars of the meet as Steven Cotter and Chris Meados ran away from the pack and finished one-two. Andover will run in Elk River’s Section 7AA meet, too, on Oct. 25.

Nate Webster placed 30th, Breck Hickman 32nd, and Alexander Holm 49th for the Elks other counting scores.
